What to Consider Before Purchasing Educational Software

There are important things to consider before purchasing educational software. The following tips are only guidelines, but make you analyze the importance of what you choose.

These aren't listed in a certain order, but make certain you think about your answers carefully before you make your purchase. Your software enjoyment and learning success will benefit from a little research before making your purchase.

  • User's age: Will your toddler or college student be using the program? Be sure the software is appropriate for the user. Maybe Sponge Bob Squarepants can teach your young child typing skills, but you could probably use a more advanced typing software program!
  • Is it suited to the user's learning style? Does your child learn best by solving puzzles or playing adventure games or taking quizzes? Search for programs that feature their learning style.
  • Is it going to hold the user's interest? Search for software that is self-paced and may even feature a favorite interactive storybook or cartoon character.
  • Computer System Requirements: Will the software run with your system? A good educational software will tell you the system requirements your computer must have to run the program successfully. Be sure to read this part thoroughly.
  • Availability: If at all possible, find out if the software is in stock. Look at the shipping options. Are you able to download the product immediately?
  • Price: Is it the best deal for the product? Look at other educational software sites to get get a feel for prices along with shipping costs. Look for features such as states without sales tax and discount shipping.
  • Are you looking for software by topic or by name? If you know the title of the software you are searching for, then you've probably already done some homework. But, if you only know that you want software that would help you  learn to speak French, then take time to review the options of each of the many selections available.
  • Returns/Exchanges: Does the retailer accept product returns? How easy is it to exchange a product? If the software you bought doesn't fit your requirements or doesn't load on your computer, you'll need to exchange the software for one you will enjoy.

Considering these factors will make sure that you will make the selection that will optimize the learning experience and the usage of your product.
